SkepticalObservor: Hypocrisies Among Our "Moderate" Friends

Or better titled: "May God Save Sean Connaughton From His Supporters."

Don't just take my word for it, take James Young's word.

Too Conservative (the website, not the pseudonym) is slowly becoming an embarassment, which is rather unfortunate considering the gentleman who runs the blog is a very articulate young man.

James is right. The moderates' collective inability to maintain a modicum of intelligent discourse hurts them badly, and if the good folks at "Too Conservative" don't get the point very quickly, someone else might have to (and should) clue them in before they destroy what has the potential to be a very good blog.

My US$0.02 for what it's worth... but then again free advice is always worth what you pay for it!

Thanks for the plug, Shaun (we've really got to meet sometime and/or have a beer), but I add one qualification to your comment. TC has come a long way in becoming a pretty good blog (though not as good as ours, obviously, ;-)), and my comments were limited to commenters on the site. As I understand it, the comments to which I took exception were made by those who are not contributors and hence, those who are properly held responsible for them.

Oh, agreed entirely. Jim Riley, Jay Hughes, and Mr. Too Conservative are all class acts.

But the comments section...

All the more reason why pseudonymous and anonymous bloggers have to go.

Just curious.

I respect your intentions and your intelligence, but why are you so concerned about other bloggers?

I am sure you do not approve of my blog and that is ok with me. I am doing something that has been a long time in comming. The people I "flame", attack and otherwise expose, have been doing harm to our citizens and the nation for far too long.

Do I expect things to change? Not really, but I can't sit by and do nothing when I see the lives destroyed by corrupt officals!

If you have a more effective way of exposing and ridding our society of this scourge I am all ears.

At least people are questioning instead following blindly.

The number one job of our government is to provide protection from harm to the citizens. Without that nothing else matters. The current focus on coal minning deaths is a farce. According to the BLS only 24 coal miners died in 2004. Meanwhile Truck Drivers had over 800 deaths a year. Does anyone care? Fishing has the highest death rate, followed by Farming. Mining is way down the list.

I'm just very frustrated by a government and media that appear totally corrupt. And a few harsh TRUE words seem insignificant in the face of reality!

Tom asserts that "The number one job of our government is to provide protection from harm to the citizens." Sorry, Tom, but not in this constitutional republic. Actions against police for failing to protect citizens fail every time they're tried. The only duty to protect that our government has is to protect us from foreign enemies.

People have a duty to protect themselves.

Try to protect yourself and you will be considered a vigilante! So what and how do you suggest one does this? Let's start with the most dangerous place in America the highways.

I anxiously await your reply!

Also I believe the it reads is "....enemies,both foreign and domestic...."

Now the trick is to define enemy

I'll start with just local government protection, such as adequate fire, rescue, law enforcement, and safe drinking water.

Back to the subject of the post.

Why do you guys care about other bloggers?

Is it some type of elitist mentality?

Are you somehow threatened?

Do you want your views to be more respected and feel other blogs detract from this goal?

The cream always rises to the top. If you truly are worth more recognition, you will get it.

But stifling others will do nothing but push us backward. A free exchange of ideas and opinions is healthy for everyone but the ill intentioned.

This is a free and open medium the first one I believe. We have lots to learn and gain from it. Let's not destroy it!

Well, Tom, actually, both the common and statutory law recognize the right of self-defense (as does the Declaration, against oppressive government), so you really don't know what you're talking about. To be sure, "Try to protect yourself and you will be considered a vigilante" by far Left slanderers, but the law recognizes the right of self-defense.

As for your 10:30 post, I'm not sure what you're referring to (it may be the oath of citizenship and commissioning of officers), but reference to that oath is distinct from the actual, actionable obligation imposed upon government.

And as to your final post, spare us the pretensions of your nonsensical rhetorical questions. No one is talking about "stifling others." This is criticism of others for inconsistencies and hypocrisies. Are you suggesting that others should be immune from criticism? If so, then you should be offended by those who attack the undersigned.

Hey there Tom,

My opposition to pseudonyms or anonymous commentary concerning blogs may be criticized as elitist by some. I would like to think that it would be considered more egalitarian than anything else.

My take has more to do with civility, honor, decorum, etc. and the "road rage" effect just a little bit of anonymity does to otherwise good people.

It's an ethics question IMO. Anonymous commentary can elicit some of the very worst, most critical comments that can't be verified, can't be refuted, and can't be retracted. Pseudonymns can be just as bad.

Now there are a few exceptions to this rule. We're all familiar with Publius (see the Federalist Papers), and we're familiar with folks like John Behan and JadedJD. But those are the exceptions, and never have I seen a traceable anonymous poster become "respectable" over time.

In short, if you're going to comment, do so with your name attached. What does it solve? I think it brings the level of debate and information exchange to a better level, plus it's more true to the original intent of the internet -- the free exchange of (albeit scientific) ideas.

If - in a perfect world - people could be nice, courteous, and stick to the problem rather than work the person, then I wouldn't have so much of a problem. However, given the not-so-perfect world we live in, my distaste for pseudonymns and anonymous bloggers is a personal choice that I enforce and beat the drum for as often as I can.

A free market choice, if you will. :)

Tom, I have no problems going after and exposing corrupt officials. If one must do this pseudonymously, then by all means please do! But it's a luxury that few people are as noble to maintain for honorable purposes (and I'm sure you'll agree most don't)!

Wow! Mr. Young and Mr. Kenny, you both make very good points.

However, how do I convince judges and juries of your point of view?

I am refering to my case, which I will discuss in private if you are interested.

Which took place in Hanover County a place you guys would consider "Conservative"? I have been advised by many others in Law Enforcement I was done wrong and the officer and magistrates in my case were corrupt.
However no one was willing to do anything upon formal complaints.

So, back to the real world we have to live in, your theroy dosen't hold water in application. In my case anyway. In a "Consevative" stronghold.

I still want to hear how you protect yourself on the highway?

And thanks for the replies.

Mr Young, another question I would have is: Why is local government in charge of Fire, Rescue, Law Enforcement, Safe Water etc. If it is not their/our duty to do so?

If we are a Government of, by, and for the people?
