Scientist predicts 'mini Ice Age'

Yes yes, I know there is a fallacy that whenever a "scientist" proclaims an event, it must be true.

Still, given that most of the scientific community seems rather split regarding the causes and effects of global warming, it's interesting to hear the following hypothesis:
Khabibullo Abdusamatov of the Pulkovo Astronomic Observatory in St. Petersburg said Monday that temperatures will begin falling six or seven years from now, when global warming caused by increased solar activity in the 20th century reaches its peak, RIA Novosti reported.

The coldest period will occur 15 to 20 years after a major solar output decline between 2035 and 2045, Abdusamatov said.

Dramatic changes in the earth's surface temperatures are an ordinary phenomenon, not an anomaly, he said, and result from variations in the sun's energy output and ultraviolet radiation.

The Northern Hemisphere's most recent cool-down period occurred between 1645 and 1705. The resulting period, known as the Little Ice Age, left canals in the Netherlands frozen solid and forced people in Greenland to abandon their houses to glaciers, the scientist said.
Which is an entirely plausible explanation.

Personally, I am more inclined to believe this than global warming (though my thoughts have always been that this "warming" may have been to factors beyond our control). Now how will the global warming nuts go if these actions come to pass?

If you remember your European History, the last mini ice age was known as 'the dark ages'.

Lets hope he's wrong.

Was the last "mini-ice age" during the Dark Ages? I thought it was during the 14th century (early Renaissance)?

So it will be really cold and dark? Sounds like the beginning of another baby boom to me...

but i sense you beleive that that global wharming is not real

Jokes aside about seances and mind-reading, "global warming" has typically held connotations of the fragile Earth being destroyed by rapacious humans, etc.

What we know is that something is going on. What we don't know is why. The wild jumps to hysterical conclusions (on either side) are what amuse me.

To be fair, there is no concensus on these findings. But, if there are larger cycles, then they could easily explain the eras of warming and cooling we see geologically. At best science can only state that they do not know the cause of the problem.

Precisely.

Art needs a blog!
