What are you giving up for Lent?

Yes, today is Mardi Gras. But tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, where guys like me go around all day with dirt on our foreheads.

What am I giving up for Lent? Soft drinks. All of 'em.

What am I doing to make myself a better person? Committing myself to waking up before 8am every day (that means weekends). Yep, it's in writing, so Mrs. Kenney can nag me all she wants, send in the kids, and wake me up. It's done.

Lent is typically associated with sacrifice, something that we as Americans hate doing. But it's not about mere sacrifice. It's about Christ, understanding what He went through, and preparing ourselves for Easter Triddum. Focus would be a better word, especially in such a narcissistic, selfish world.

Remember! Thou art dust. And to dust you shall return...

Yeah, but then I'd have to crash at 1:00am to get the requisite four hours of sleep!

I'm with you on the soft drinks. I have been on a diet for about 2 months now and one of my severe addictions is Coke Classic. I've been able to ween myself off if for the most part, but let myself have a taste every weekend. For Lent it's gone 100%. Of course as a typical Presbyterian, I will probably allow myself cheat alittle - and make my own rules as the season progresses.

As for waking early - don't you have little ones? I do and I don't think I've slept beyond 7am since 2001.

I don't know how Presbyterians do it, but for Catholics you don't fast on:

1. Feast Days
2. Sundays

So those are the days you can "cheat", though it's not cheating per se when in actuality your are celebrating the Resurrection.

So Sundays are cool.

There actually is some church guidance from the Presb. on observing Lent. Of course we really don't spend much time looking at the rules so they are probably along the Catholic lines.

Great now I have an excuse to feed my addiction. Wonderful!
