Not so fast there... the Jeffersonians referred to themselves as Republicans (as opposed to the Federalist system of governance). The ideological founder of the Democratic Party is Andrew Jackson. For the GOP, you might say Abe Lincoln. Jefferson ultimately can be claimed by neither party... but his legacy to date seems firmly in the Republican camp thanks to the ideals of limited government. Then again, applying 18th century modes of thought to 21st century roles... not a good thing to try. At 11:31 PM, .... said... He believed that government was to service the people, not the other way around as the federalists believed. Jefferson may have been the ideological FOUNDER of the Democrat party, and for a while democrats actually reflected current conservative ideals. However, since Wilsonian ideologies crept in, and FDR basically re-wrote what Democrats stood for, it is more proper to say that the ideological founder of the MODERN Democrat party is Karl Marx.
