Sunday, May 21, 2006Jewbaiting Harris MillerRepublicans and Democrats need to be especially aware whenever the old hatreds of past generations seep into today's politics. It's intolerable, and a sin against the public square. In that spirit, I think this has gone far enough. I've always made the charge that there are certain Democrats who pay lip service to minorities if only to subjugate them, either by "keeping them in their place" through social programs, or when the rubber hits the road offering "mainstream" or "centrist" candidates as standard-bearers. We'll start with this instance from NLS: There might be nothing more uncomfortable than a candidate whose analogies don't come from personal experience. Harris Miller is Jewish and doesn't go to church! Now this comment, and comments like these have been circling ever since the "anti-Christ of outsourcing" slander was uttered by former Reagan Secretary James Webb. Virginia Virtucon picked up on it, as did J's Notes and Two Conservatives, coming to the same conclusion most of us are coming to: James Webb's supporters are making a caclulated effort to "jewbait" Harris Miller. Now some unsurprising people are rushing to the defense of Webb and attacking both Chad Dotson and myself for pointing out the obvious. So let's get into the details, shall we? Jewbaiting is a word created by the Germans in 1853 (literally Judenheutze) who's purpose is to use the Jewishness of an individual as part of his definition, usually as an epithet. In anti-Semitic Germany, you can only imagine what connotations it would have... "He's a shrewd businessman, but he's a Jew after all... He drove a tough bargain, but Jews are like that... I've never been able to trust that fellow, but Jews can help but be that way..." That's jewbaiting, and it's disgusting. Fast forward to today. In the midst of a negative attack campaign by James Webb, what purpose does it have to mention outsourcing, being a lobbyist for both Repubicans and Democrats, having no support from liberals and oh yes... he's a Jew that doesn't go to church? Simple answer? Webb is jewbaiting his opposition. Need some proof? Jews don't go to church, they go to synagouge. Small semantic (or semitic) difference, but one hell of a way to remind Virginians that Harris Miller is not one-of-us "churchgoing" Virginians, but in fact "other". "Other" as in Jewish. So not only does Webb have yellow star for Miller, Webb's campaign also seeks to play those supposedly ignorant Virginia Democrats in the Valley, in Southside, and in the Southwest against Miller -- and with the complicity of those who just seek to flick away concerns with "aww, you guys are taking this too seriously." Can't you see the giggling activists now? Playing the electorate against each other like their fools? Slick, isn't it? So don't try to sell me on the idea that certain Democrats aren't trying to jewbait Harris Miller, or that certain people still don't hold those prejudices close to their heart (on both sides of the aisle). The insinuations and reminders to Democratic primary voters that Miller isn't one-of-us is symptomatic of the entire Democratic Party's approach to minorities -- and probably why minority voters have endorsed Miller in the first place. Jewbaiting Harris Miller -- the last desperate tactic of a desperate campaign. Democrats deserve better than a candidate who spits upon minorities in order to gain power. UPDATE: Kilo over at Spark It Up! feels the same outrage all of us should feel.

What are Webb and Miller, the D's fifth and sixth choices?
No where is the term "anti-Christ of outsourcing" mentioned anywhere...
Anywhere, that is, except from the mouth of James Webb.
That only serves to prove the point. Seems as if I'm not the only person - Democrat or Republican - who feels this way.
Anywhere, that is, except from the mouth of James Webb."
Wrong. The third link is saying the same thing.

To get all of the anti-semitic people to come out and vote?
The modern usage is "horrible person who I detest". Current candidates are of almost every religion, with Jews (if anything) under-represented. William Hung? Miller doesn't even make the list, labeled only in relation to outsourcing American jobs.
Comments on Vivian Paige's put the matter in context. Virginians elect folks of most any faith (gender, race) if they run and if they have a decent platform.
Miller's advocacy of outsourcing and worker visas should be the subject; his opposition to ballot paper-trails, and his role in having industry collect personal data on citizens and 'donate' it to the government. Webb's position on gender in light of Tailhook should be the subject, his opposition to (or flip-flopping on) affirmative action, or his refusal to impliment Congressional mandates. These are the issues that effect Virginia.
Oh, and I object to the region-baiting that implies folks in the Valley, in Southside, and in the Southwest are stupid and prejudiced.
Frankly, this a lot of nonsense.
I'm a software engineer and anti-outsourcing activist who has, on more than one occassion, described Miller as the "anti-christ" in the context of his seemingly infinite capacity for lies and political manipulation. Miller has been the president and chief lobbyist for the pro-offshore outsourcing and pro-NIV worker replacement ITAA "tech" lobby.
I've been attacking Miller for more than 3 years and only recently became aware that he is Jewish. My response is "so what?" The term, "anti-christ" has cultural meaning distinct from the biblical origins. It has come to mean infinite evil and deception -- the hallmarks of Miller's success as a "business immigration" insider-lobbyist.
I think it's unfortunate that so many people are so ill-informed that they rush to accuse people of anti-semitism without getting their facts straight.
You can read more about Miller on my blog, The Modern Patriot
To accuse somebody of anti-semitism because they've made an impolitic comment is to trivialize the real thing and that is both dangerous and offensive to Jews.
Anti-semitism is much more than insulting a candidate who happens to be Jewish. I agree that Webb should not have used the term anti-Christ, but only because it's disrespectful to Christians. If he had called Miller the Darth Vader of labor would you guys still be attacking Webb as jew baiting?
Webb was simply trying to convey the fact that Miller was anathema to organized labor. And much of organized labor happens to be, and historically has been, Jewish. So, does that make Miller an anti-semite because he opposes them?
Probably not. Let's turn the nasty rhetoric and the pompous explorations of something you have no experience with down and concentrate on the real issues.
That's what mystifies me, and many others as well.
You're exaggerating,Shaun.
Look at all my postings on my blog, The Modern Patriot or at my many postings on Raising Kaine. My criticism of Miller is focused on his lies and insider-lobbyist history of supporting offshore outsourcing and "business visa" IT/white collar worker replacement programs.
If there are any bloggers who consistently post about "Miller's faith", please name them and point to specific examples.
If NLS was half as politically aware as he thinks he is, he would have known this. Instead, his ignorance led him into this morass.
Your comments may very well be perfectly legitimate.
What I and everyone else is taking issue with is Ben Tribbett's attack on Miller's faith.
I think we can all agree that calling Miller out on his faith is unacceptable, yes?
That is the only item I take exception with.
Pretty embarrassing when most of those you have accused are Jews.
Also it's amazing how the accusation itself diminished from Webb to Webb supporters to, oh, just one blogger, NLS.
Actually probably nobody was Jewbaiting, but Miller's campaign has thrashed around desparately trying to paint Webb as racist, anti-feminists, and when none of that stuck, as a Jewbaiter. Why don't they give up on those ridiculous attacks and stick to the issues?
Could it be because their candidate's stand on those issues just don't match the core values of the Democratic Party?
Likewise, Republicans should focus on why they oppose the Democrat and why they support Allen
Oh, what a novelty. A campaign based on actual issues not slander and attack. Unfortunately Miller and his supporters have already lowered the bar so much that that might not happen now.
Please provide the URL and specific comments you find objectionable. I'll be better able to respond with the details.
However, I think that we can agree that what one blogger (Ben Tribbet) *may* have said about "Miller's faith" (your description) is quite distinct from your earlier accusation that a widespread anti-semitic, jew-baiting attack had been launched against Miller.
