Bearing Drift: Goldman on Webbloggers

Jim Hoeft over at Bearing Drift has a great op-ed from Paul Goldman concerning the negative effect Webb-supporting blogs have had on his campaign:
Without the Blogger's over-the-top attacks on Miller, would this be a different campaign right now?

We will never know.

But what we do that in the new two weeks, Miller is free to make an almost exclusive negative against Webb because the Bloggers created the climate to do it.
Ditto.

Positive and negative campaigning have a role in politics. But what does not have a role is nasty campaigning. Webb supporters take note: when Harris Miller wins, the blame can be squarely placed on a Democratic blogosphere run amok.

Well, the race isn't over yet. I'm still hoping Webb, himself, will emerge -- make some news that can’t be ignored -- to overshadow all the bad vibes swirling around this primary race.

Still, Goldman makes a good point. So do you.

That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read.

If Webb loses, and I sure hope he does not, I expect the blame will splatter in several directions. It usually does. Those who can will duck and cover, hoping to deflect whatever blame they can.

The campaign’s hired expert advisors will get out of town fast and probably blame the candidate. From what I've seen of Webb's foaming-at-the-mouth attack dog bloggers I will be surprised if even one of them steps up to the plate to accept the slightest responsibility.

So, Harris Miller's terrible "lies" suggesting Jim Webb is an occasional Democrat will be blamed. Traitors such as the Washington Post will be cited. Paul Goldman and Henry Marsh will probably be targeted as culprits. And, others...

Not going to happen. It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. You seriously need to get off your high horse...

Right now is the most important time to attack miller on the blogs - while more people are watching and researching. I look forward to it.

And it will help Webb, despite what you people have convinced yourselves...

Mr. Rea:

Have you ever seen a campaign before?

Well, virginia centrist, as it happens I’ve seen and covered more than a few elections in my travels.

And, I must say I’m cut to the quick that someone, anyone, would wonder if my lack of exposure to the rough and tumble of politics has been driving my quirky questioning of your ilk’s approach to copywriting.

The horror... I’m going to have to take a break here to crack another can of Blue Ribbon to drown my sorrow.

So, if I’m taking your insanely clever sarcasm right -- yes, I’ve been busted. Now I’m forced to admit that I have actually seen many a heap of the sort of claptrap that’s been hurled back and forth across the Internet by the “passionate” bloggers for Miller and Webb.

Then there’s this: I’ve also seen professional campaign experts revealed by an election to have been dead wrong. But blame seems to roll off their backs.

What’s new is the Internet’s growing potential to play a role in elections. I’m simply playing the game as I see fit. I prefer not to run with the pack. If aiming your attacks at anyone who won’t obediently chant your slogans, in the name of advancing Webb is more cleverness, and fun, too, go for it.

There’s a can’t-miss vote-getter if I’ve ever seen one.

F.T. Rea,

I may not agree with your choice in candidate, but I like what you write.

Lack of exposure to politics means little. In fact, sometimes it's better for others to look inside the fishbowl and remind us where reality is.

Great comments.
