It is NOT Rocky VI as there was no Rocky V according to ESPN's Sports Guy, Bill Simmons (who was a classmate of mine at Holy Cross.)

That is why they are calling it Rocky Balboa instead of Rocky VI.

Unfortunately, riley, no matter how much we wish it was not so, there was actually a Rocky V, even though it did not involve a fight in the ring for Rocky.

Apparently in Rocky VI, Balboa gets juiced up, probably on embryonic stems cells and steroids, which magically return the skills which previously magically appeared in Rocky 2/3/4.

So we went from a nice although somewhat scary story where a really stupid crooked half-rate boxer could actually almost win a championship because boxing was a corrupt sport and the champion figues it was just a paycheck while the stupid boxer is too dumb to realise he doesn't have a chance --

To a series of stories about a superhuman highly trained fighting machine capable of integrating multiple boxing styles, replacing his muscular makeup to suddenly be a fast dancing boxer, who can withstand multiple blows to the head from a boxed who can actually break blocks, and who now has found a way to cheat aging.

Rocky I was also one of those films where a brutish man forces himself on a woman who says no but really means yes. Couldn't do that today, and they don't even try.

Come on. Clubber Lang (Mr. T) and Ivan Drago were awesome villains in III and IV.

Charles, you obviously haven't been keeping up with "Rescue Me" on FX.

Clubber was a great villian. Drago was more a pathetic pawn. The real villians were the people who were using him, but who turned their back on him when he didn't get them what they wanted.

But surely you could not believe that the Rocky victories in 2,3, and 4 could ever have REALLY happened to the Rocky character portrayed in Rocky 1.

Rocky 5 was the only other truly believable Rocky, because given the fact that boxing is corrupt, Mr. Gunn clearly could have been a less than capable boxer, and having been trained by a man who (in Rocky 1) couldn't hardly tie his own shoes, would have never been able to beat a crooked street fighter in a street fight.

Jim, you are right, I don't watch Rescue Me, even though the lead actor (Dennis Leary) is a guy I like to watch in general (I loved him in the movie "The Ref" with Kevin Spacey).

Gotta hand it to Ivan Drago -- best bad guy of them all!

"If he dies, he dies."

"You will lose."

Beating on commies on Christmas Day in Moscow? Does it get better? :)

Don't forget these gems:

I must break you.

And (this isn't an exact quote), after pushing his handler off the ring "I fight for ME".

Gems?!?

Yeah, and I really bought that Gorbachev would've been intimidated.
