History is what comes to mind when I think of what I am proud of in VA.

I cannot say the preservation and awareness of that history has been a big positive, but that's another topic.

My whole life has been shaped by the history of Virginia.

When I was 11 years old I recieved my first metal detector. Being raised in Hanover County the Civil War was everywhere. My uncle owned the land Patrick Henry was born on. I searched these areas everyday after school and all day on weekends and summers.

This led me to start doing research and study of the artifacts I found. Which also included many non-metalic items from native Americans. This research took me down many roads in history I would have never ventured had I not found these items.

Actually, being the first person to touch many of these things since they were lost, some as old as the 1600's European and much older Native American, is a feeling that will be lost to future generations, as the bulldozers continue to destroy many of the areas that were still yeilding many valuable artifacts.

People and archeologist have looked at relic hunters as destroyers of the past and thieves. But I can assure you many items from the past would have never been preserved had it not been for these dedicated lovers of the past and they are owed a debt of gratitude. As no one is doing anything to protect these fragile areas from the destruction of development and bulldozers.

Granted they were not documented and recovered in a scientific manner, but they have been preserved for future generations. Liquid fertilizers in the last 20-30 years have also taken a toll on many other items yet to be recovered on farm land.

I have travelled the US exploring the history of many areas and times past, that I never would have been aware of, had I not, as a chiild developed this love of discovering the past in VA.

Luckily, I was able to share this look into the past with my son and daughter and my son is now majoring in history.
