Sunday, December 17, 2006 Battle of the Bulge 16 December 1944: Operaton Wacht am Rhein began when elements of the German 6th SS Panzer and 5th Panzer attacked through the Ardennes forest. The Battle of the Bulge would become the bloodiest battle of World War II with 19,000 Americans dead, involving over 630,000 American soldiers -- more than at the Battle of Gettysburg.
