Tuesday, December 05, 2006Fix the BCS!Chris Obenshain gets it. And for everyone else who demands justice (and a playoff) in college football, it is definitely time to Fix the BCS. Michael Wilbon over at the WaPo attacks the entire system in one fell swoop, thanking Florida Coach Urban Meyer for sticking to his guns even after his team made it to the BCS Championship. It's not a big leap to reach this conclusion. Two weeks ago, when it appeared his Gators might be passed over in favor of Michigan, Florida Coach Urban Meyer essentially said if Florida was passed over for the big game, the powers that be ought to come up with a playoff system right now, this season. The only problem here is the 12-school conference. After playing 11 teams, do you really think college football is ready for a 4-game playoff showdown? Let's say it is a bracket of 16, does that mean we'll hear complaints from the 17th ranked team that went 11-0 vs. a 9-2 SEC or ACC team? Lots of problems, not many answers.

1. I don't see how any playoff system would be perfect, some good team will always be left out and how do you do the pairings that would create good games without a lot of re-matches from games played during the season. Thank goodness we avoided that this year with the selection of Florida over Michigan. And to extend the season another 3-4 games would be bad for everyone..I mean it is already bad that Ohio State has to wait alomost 2 MONTHS to play for the national title. Plus the effect on player injuries and more games means less chance a team can run the table with a perfect record.
2. That said, I think we would lose something if we had a "real" national champion in college football. The bowl system rewards many programs for a good season and by leaving the door open for controversy by not have a definite playoff system, there is more at stake for the players and the fans. I like that we can end up with a bunch of 12-1 teams all claiming to be national champion. It adds drama and excitement to the game. Hasn't the BCS process already sucked all the life out of the New Year's day bowls??
I say get rid of the championship game and go back to just the bowls (make the big ones on New Years flexible to pick the best matchups) and leave it at that. Or if you must, take the #1 and #2 after the bowls and have your championship game based on that. That way you don't spoil the bowls weeks before the games are played. And you leave a little room for bragging rights for the players and the fans.
PS: WE ARE....PENN STATE. Go Lions!
Call me a traditionalist, but here's my solution: go back to the old traditional bowl alliances, and quit pretending that we're crowning a "national champion" in a "championship" game.
Let's just go back to the way we did things for the first 100 or so years before some genius came up with this BCS nonsense.
