Flies!

Perhaps not, but something is hatching. In the little courtyard we have, there are all of these small "flies" going around. I know their something that hatched over the last week or so given all the warm weather, but there's tons of 'em!

I am assuming this is a Central Virginia phenomenon, much like the ladybugs that decided to camp out in my bedroom over the winter. "Don't worry about them," said a friend of mine, "that's a Central Virginia thing."

Of course, we never had ladybugs in Caroline County. Just tons of crickets, frogs, ticks and mosquitos. I do remember one unseasonably warm year on the farm where the mosquitos came out, then a terrible cold snap. That summer, there were notably fewer mosquitos outside.

Hopefully, everything that is a nuisance is hatching... and we'll get a foot of snow to finish them off!

Pharaoh didn't have Raid!

I think they're wasps. I have no way of confirming that other than the fact they look like small ants with wings.

They are either small ants with wings, or termites.

If you are seeing them flying around in the day, they are probably small flying ants, because termites don't really like sun.

For several years, we'd have these little flying ants all over our windows and sliding glass door, usually in march or april (on the inside of the house).

Apparently they wanted to get outside.

Not mosquitos though, and with all of the rain there's plenty of standing water nearby...

Flying ants???

I've seen queen ants, but I didn't think that flying ants were something particular to Virginia.

Termites might be one thing... but I know for a fact we didn't have any termites on the property last year.

Just a lot of tiny bugs getting ready for the COLD SNAP!!! mwuhaha!

Hm. Flying ants MIGHT be termites. They move FAST.

Well whaddya know.

They are indeed flying ants.

After rainy periods, the ants hatch from the colony and look for a new colony. Given the warm weather and all the rain we've been having, now was as good a time as any for the ants to make their debut.

They're ants -- three segmented parts (hence why I originally thought they might be baby wasps or something).

Termites on the other hand... geez, my house would look like a re-enactment of World War I.

Generally subterranean termites don't like sun, but I forget when they are in their winged phase they like to fly toward the sun -- but that only lasts a short time (an hour or so?).

Shaun, never doubt me. :-)
