The article I saw on this incident specifically said no shots were fired.
Our military is not supposed to shoot people on our soil. They aren't on the border to perform enforcement actions.
They are there to be observers, to report to the border patrol agents. They are armed in case someone attacks them, which makes it safer than putting ordinary unarmed citizens out on patrol.
I don't really mind that our military (national guard) did NOT get into a firefight with armed civilians.

"...an unknown number of gunmen attacked..."
"The Border Patrol will not say whether shots were fired. However, no Guardsmen were injured in the incident."

'Gunmen' attacked but they won't say if 'shots were fired'? Begs the question: How did they know they were gunmen?
Sure, it's alarming, I'll agree to that, but this is a very vague account. More facts are needed.
Don't the guardsmen have night-vision equipment? Isn't there some kind of periphery sensing (tripwires anyone?)
Smells a lot like someone sleeping on guard duty and got surprised.
