Monday, January 08, 2007Idiocy Abounds (On Chickenhawks)Once more into the breach with the chickenhawk argument. Once again anti-war liberals, and take notes: If we are concerned about a shortage of manual labor in America, does that mean one should quit their current line of employment and pick tomatoes? We need good roads, should one quit and join VDOT if you really believed that? Good schools, so go be a teacher? Streets free of crime, so go be a deputy? If you do none of these things? Well... that's clear evidence you're not really in favor of agriculture, transportation, education, and law enforcement? There are a variety of items society desires. But that doesn't mean we all jump like lemmings to the calls of the left, nor do we sell-out for the verbal morass some anti-war pacifists short on sound logic use as argumentation. ...and this one is just so clear, it really has to make you wonder.

The point is not that you have to join up to support something. The point is that you shouldn't call for someone else to die if you're not willing to do so yourself. Expect from others only what you yourself are willing to give. It's sort of like that whole "do unto others" thing.
Because that was the other half to that "do unto others" bit, yes?
If the point is merely the will-to-do (and not in actuality), then the whole thing is in the hypothetical -- and groundless.
OTOH, if we are talking about realities, then those truly concerned about test averages would be teachers, those truly concerned about transportation would be building roads, and those truly concerned about Iraq should join the military.
Or not.
This can't be had both ways. Either the charge is so hypothetical as to escape meaning, or so grave that the only measure of concern is direct and wholehearted involvement.
And where did this tidbit of information come from? Sitting at your computer making childish comments about...
...ah, forget it.
You don't think we are?
Man, that's a rough farm, but hey, it's VA, I can imagine agriculture gets pretty heated... what with all that animal husbandry goin on nearby.
woof.
All B are A, not all A are B?
Animal husbandry, Doug? I assume you mean our cousins in Occupied Virginia?
Yikes. Not goin' there.
because of this, more people are going to need to step up to the plate. the call, then, comes to those of you who support this action in the first place, as it would be sort of silly to expect someone who disagrees with it to put their life on the line for it.
so, then, the crux: if you want it to happen, lets see some effort. i explicitly dont, so this is not a challenge, just pointing out that there aren't enough warm bodies to do the deed at this point.
You don't believe we need a "surge" of teachers? Police officers? Firemen? Engineers? Farmers?
Again, the fallacy here is the implication that if one truly believes, then one must be a fill-in-the-blank.
And if one is not, then one must not care about the military, education, transportaion, fire and rescue, crime, etc.
I care about clean streets, but that doesn't mean I'm signing up as a janitor. I also care about roads, but I'm not going to work for VDOT. Ad infinitum.
Do we need a "surge" in Iraq? That I really don't know. Pentagon says we do, and I know what happened the last time we let politicians run a war...
I will concede this: the "chickenhawk" argument does become relevant when there is a draft on. At that point, the volunteer aspect is eliminated and the need is apparent.
No worries, I'm sure y'all will get their 'lifestyle' made illegal any old time now.
Trouble is, they keep a-marryin and a-breedin... maybe if you cut off their latte supply??
