OTB: 15-month enlistment?

James Joyner over at Outside The Beltway talks about the merits and pitfalls of a 15-month enlistment, specifically targeted towards those either in college or the recently graduated.

Another segment of society that would profit from (or detractors might argue, become a target for) a 15-month enlistment: the unemployed.

This is all still in the ether, so don't go running to your nearest Army recruiter just yet. Still, a 15-month option for military service is something I think many 18-35 year olds would consider. The only real question lies in whether or not civilians can rapidly adapt to a military environment.

The Army has known for over 60 years - actually longer - how to 'soldierize' American civilians and turn them into riflemen and other combat jobs that require only basic training and one advanced individual training school.

It's a great idea to package this enlistment for patriotic young men to go serve, fight, and go home.

I agree. I know plenty of people who are deterred from an eight-year committment to the Armed Forces, and would welcome a 15-month enlistment out of college (or even before college).

Heck, I know a few people would take an offer of a 15-month enlistment *right now*.

Well, since the Marines have a 15 week training plan, so close to four months, then another month for specialist training, that would mean 10 months on duty. Not a bad deal.

Ah...

I still wouldn't mind doing a 15 or 19 month stint in the Army and going for an eight-year inactive reserve.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind doing Army Reserve period. I think it's a great option.
