How to Get the Most Out of Your Books

I read constantly, as my extensive library and Mrs. Kenney's threats to buy Borders stock testify. As a young man, I perfected the art of "scanning" a book quickly just long enough to get the toplines... only to ignore some of the finer details. Reading in depth I have found to be a much more profitable exercise, but that comes at the cost of time. As a college student, time wasn't exactly a luxury.

So when I see things entitled "How to Get the Most Out of Your Books" that incorporate the best of scanning with all the advantages of reading in depth (and hopefully retaining the information), I like that.

Only downside? Marking up your book... and I can't stand doing that to a good book! When someone invents a highlighter that fades in six months to a year, I'm golden.

I need to find a way to get through books faster. I really enjoy the finer details, but it always seems to take me forever to get through. And I can't bring myself to mark up a book. I always start with a blank sheet of paper to use as a bookmark and then take notes on it.

Fading highlighter... that's a GREAT idea! Or one that could be erased with some UV or some such.

Patent that man.

I completely agree. I'm probably one of the few college students who actually prefers buying the new versions instead of used because I like to have control over all the marking (if any) or bends in the spine that might occur

I've rarely sold back a book from my college days of yore. Why bother? You never get enough for them anyway, and half the time you find yourself wishing you hadn't sold it a couple of semesters later.

I keep my library!

Hear hear! I still have college texts (Calculus and such) that come in handy now and again. Also, some books are just so damn NICE. The Harry Potter series is truly gorgeous, great typography, beautiful binding, the whole nine yards. As much as I love the computer, books still have something computers don't.
