Tuesday, March 11, 2008ABC News: McCain lashes Democrats for criticizing NAFTARepublican presidential nominee Senator John McCain gives some straight talk smack to the Dems pandering to Big Labor: 'I do not believe in isolationism and protectionism,' McCain said. 'We've got to stop this protectionist NAFTA-bashing.'Ouch. McCain's camp seems to be doing more and more to create a Churchill-esque mystique around their candidate, and to a strong degree of success. The great thing about this race is that the Democrats -- whomever emerges with the nomination -- will have to practically re-invent themselves around McCain's character. That's no small task. While Hillary Clinton may be more of a "centrist" than Barack Obama, the more heavily she attacks her erstwhile Democratic rival, the more she hurts her brand amongst the moderates President Bill Clinton worked so hard to court. Obama faces less of a problem, but the question of experience becomes even more acute when Hillary's nagging questions of doubt are replaced with war-hero John McCain's record and reputation. Judgment may work against Hillary, but you don't call out a Vietnam POW on judgment. In the meantime, McCain quietly builds strength while Obama and Hillary duke it out. A beautiful thing.

The loss of Denny Hastert's seat is only the beginning. Expect House losses in the teens, not single digits. We've lost our message. McCain is nowhere near Churchill, Goldwater, or the Constitution.
Besides, the current publik skool population doesn't even know who Churchill is. Churchill would call this POW out on his effort to quash freedom of speech.
I'm certainly not comparing the man to Churchill... but insofar as images go, they are doing a far better job of packaging (and protecting) their candidate.
Now whether McCain demonstrates that his talk on conservative issues wasn't all fluff will ultimately bear out in his VP pick. I'd certainly like to see a strong conservative emerge, someone who is a known quantity and not an empty hat.
We shall see.
